Why drive an EV (Electric Vehicle)? EVs reduce your emissions, are fun to drive, and can be less expensive to operate and maintain than gas-powered vehicles. Every year there are more great choices on the market plus good, used cars. To learn more look at PlugStar and read about personal experiences from local EV drivers under the Testimonials tab shown above. Also, see how you can improve your fuel economy by checking cars on the U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA’s fuel economy website.

How much does an EV cost? Consumer Reports has published studies and has more detailed information about electric vehicles on their website concluding that they are cost-effective as well as a major way individuals can cut their carbon footprint.  There is far less maintenance needed for an EV than compared to a gas-powered vehicle. BEVs maintenance and fuel (from a utility) average 60% less than an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine), an PHEVs have roughly half of the expense of running the car.

DriveGreen, a division of the Green Energy Consumers Alliance, arranges substantial discounts for purchase or lease of many brands and models of EVs with local car dealerships. These deals change every month, so be sure to check often. If you lease a car, the leasing company gets the federal tax credit, which is why several dealers are offering attractive leasing options.  This website also has  educational resources to answer questions on many EV topics.

On top of discounted prices, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts offers rebates for buying a car and installing a chargerRead about rebates https://mor-ev.org

Steps to Take

  1. Check if there are any electric vehicle “Test Drive Fests” in your neighborhood. EV drivers love their cars and arrange these Fests all the time, and you get to check out all kinds of models, with an owner (not a salesperson). Use the PlugStar “Browse Electric Cars” tool to match your needs to your best electric car option. This interactive online guide of models helps you decide on which vehicle is right for you by having you answer a few questions. 1) how many miles you drive per day; 2) what type of long trips you make; and 3) how much passenger and cargo space you need?
  2. Check out information on charging here: https://www.revisionenergy.com/solar-power-for-your-home/electric-vehicle-charging/ Once you know which models you are interested in, go to the Green Energy Consumers Drive Green website to see if they have any attractive deals. Green Energy Consumers has arranged with local car dealerships to provide large discounts for purchase or lease of many brands and models of EVs. Note: These deals change every month. You need to tell the dealers which deal interests you. (Handy benefit: you can skip the sales pitch by showing the unbeatable DriveGreen deal.)
  3. Test drive some cars at the dealers.
  4. Let us know how it went by leaving a Testimonial under the tab above.

Deep Dive

Emissions, anyone? In Massachusetts, transportation accounts for a whopping 43% of our greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles, in combination with renewable, carbon-free electricity generation, can dramatically reduce your greenhouse gas emissions because they have lower lifecycle emissions than gas-powered cars, even after accounting for extra emissions from battery manufacturing.

With a renewable-powered EV, the only source of emissions comes from the manufacturing components, process, and transportation. If the electricity comes from fossil fuels, driving an EV is obviously not entirely pollution-free. Still, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, EVs and plug-ins have a much smaller carbon footprint than conventional cars regardless of the source of the electricity.

There are a lot of great choices on the market right now, from all-electric cars to hybrids with plug-in options. They are fun to drive and many have great acceleration and roadability. And they are cheaper to run. According to the Department of Energy, electric vehicles can save as much as $1,200 per year in fuel costs. EVs have fewer moving parts and are therefore much cheaper to maintain. They do not need oil changes and have no transmission fluid, fuel pump, timing belt, and many other moving parts.

Range anxiety? Fully electric vehicles (EV) are constrained by their battery capacity, but the battery range improves by the year. Luxury cars can go over 400 miles on a charge and mid-level vehicles are frequently over 300 miles. Hyundai can charge from 20% to 80% in 18 minutes, so are more convenient than ever.

The network of charging stations keeps expanding, with many apps that help you locate public charging stations. Many chargers are located conveniently at restaurants or roadside rest stops, and an app can filter in places for a meal or coffee break while up fuel up. There are charging stations within five miles of Medfield including downtown off of Janes Street and the Bank of America parking lot. Most homeowners will plug in when at home.

You can plug your car into any standard 110-120V outlet, but many EV and plug-in owners install a Level II 240 Volt charger, which speeds charging time up to 6X faster. Equipment plus installation of these chargers costs an average just under $1,000. This expense may be eligible for a rebate, too. You can buy an adapter to use a Tesla charger on other models.
